I love these two quotes:

"I paint because I paint," and "If Canada is not ready, the world is."

Very cool. Thanks for this!

So it's disgusting and horrible to watch a cheetah eat a fawn, but at the same time when the polar bear doesn't succeed in hunting it was morally reprehensible for the camera crew not to have shot a walrus for him? how does that make sense? what if the cheetah didn't catch the fawn, would the camera crew have been obligated to shoot the fawn down?

don't get me wrong, it was awful to watch the polar bear die, but what is the point of even watching a nature documentary if the animals are being manipulated by the crew?

I'm a huge C.S. Lewis fan, and I think the Narnia books are very weak. His other fiction is really strong - I am thinking of his Ransom Trilogy - and of course, his scholarly work is some of the most incredible of the modern age. But the Narnia books are confused, messy, and that LAST book! Geez! To think it was written for kids!

I also don't like the religious analogy. It's not that I dislike Christianity, or that I don't think Lewis had a right to write about Christianity, but I think his writing in analogy is too close to slipping stuff in. He's straightforward about it in his fiction for adults, and I wish he'd been straightforward in his books for kids.

You know, J.R.R Tolkien, who wrote the Lord of the Rings books, was a close friend of Lewis' and a great admirer of Lewis' work, and he really disliked the Narnia series. So! You're not alone.

Sorry I should clarify! I don't mean that it wasn't well written. Lewis writes beautifully! I just felt that it took me a long time to get through and I'm not sure why. No matter how much I read, there were still zillions of pages to read and I was reading many pages at a time!

I have a bad habit of thinking of which parts of a book could be cut down to make the book leaner. Or the reverse is that I think of which parts should be taken out and which parts should be extended!

I am always interested in hearing people's opinions of books--especially of books by C.S. Lewis. While I have read both fans and detractors this may be the first time I have heard Lewis' writing referred to as "tedious" and tiresome.
