Kate Endle

14 12 2009

Suprisingly, I didn’t find Kate Endle’s work on Etsy, although she does sell her collages there.

I love owls. Not sure why, but they’re one of my favourite animals. Luckily for me, owls have been the subject of choice for many artists in the last year.

I’m assuming that Endle’s inspiration comes from nature, how could it not? Most of her subjects are of birds and other animals! On Endle’s Etsy page you can see the details of her works very clearly. The details in each work make them all the more precious. Look at Love Bird (the black owl below) and Owlette Learns To Hoo (the second owl below with one “hoo”) to see what I mean by details adding so much more to the simple animal shapes. Weekly Gem: Ja Lublu tebja by TrixyPixie

14 12 2009

Love the light spots and the black and white vintage feel. So Romantic. I wish this came on 8ft by 8ft canvas.

I love Paris. I wonder if Parisians know how lucky they are to live in such a romantic, mystical, art infused, ethereal palace.

Design Love: Boldly Modern Living Room

12 12 2009

This room is pretty monochromatic but I like it. The masculine colour palette used is what draws me to it but it does feel a bit cold.  I love rooms with fireplaces that have stately mantels.

Debra Greenleaf

Two words: Etsy again

Debra Greenleaf creates mixed media paintings. The inspiration for her landscapes comes from the picturesque land that surrounds her Pennsylvania home, however, I can’t help but think of  Alice in Wonderland when I see them.

From an interview she did with Indie Pretty Perfect:

“I don’t subscribe to the antiquated notion that to be successful you have to have one signature style or stick to one media. Our personalities are not predictably consistent or one-dimensional, so our artwork shouldn’t be either! I love to have ideas, to write them down in my journal – several a day, to work them to completion and to hang them upon a wall.”

Greenleaf has her Bachelors and Masters from Penn State’s College of Art and Architecture. Check her out on Etsy.

Design Love: Pink Girl’s Room

8 12 2009

Look at the fireplace, the colossal baseboards, the Baroque armoir clock, and the rocking horses!

I know the massive amounts of pink make it a very, very girly room, but I love the simple yet delicate detailing of the room and some of the decor. I would probably take some of the things off of the mantelpiece in order to highlight the delicate details of the major accessories.

Brrr….it’s cold outside!

7 12 2009

Back in August I pondered whether I was ready for fall. The pondering was a direct result of what I call “hot car”. I really dislike “hot car”.

This morning however, I realized that I dislike “cold car” so much more. Actually, dislike isn’t a strong enough word to share my sentiments. I hate cold car. Atleast with hot car, you can wait outside until the air conditioning kicks in. With cold car, you can’t even get into your car.  The worst is not being able to get into the car because your locks are frozen. You end up having to wait in the freezing cold trying different car lock ice-melting tactics. Then when you finally get the sucker open, you have to get into the equally as cold car, only to have cold air blast at your already frozen face because it takes longer than usual to get the heat going from the frozen engine.  Don’t even get me started on the days you also need to scrape your car. I would rather it just be covered in heaps of snow because that way I know I simply can’t go anywhere.

Needless to say, it was a rough start to Monday and I only just thawed out completely, an hour later. My thawing recipe is as follows:

1. Blast the heat. I know…very anti-environment of me, but seriously, get off my back for five minutes….already miffed that it’s monday and I’m frozen. Read the rest of this entry »

Dallas Shaw

6 12 2009

At this rate Etsy is going to start charging me a finder’s fee. Here’s another Etsy gem.

Inspired by music and fashion, artist Dallas Shaw is known for proudly and boldly displaying her name on her artwork.

I like really like her vintage works, particularly the vintage key series (seen above). I love the vintage wallpaper backgrounds she uses. Read the rest of this entry »

Penguin Classics Re-Covered

5 12 2009

I love what Penguin is doing with their classics. I’ve always been a fan of hardcover books, especially onces with ornate details. And I’ve always envisioned myself having a library full of such books: an extravagant library with leather chairs and a stain-glass lamp or two.

The best part of it all is that they’re cheap: $15 CDN. Harcover books, ones with ornate details/designs aren’t usually cheap. A regular hardcover book with a paper jacket costs about 30 some odd dollars, so consider the Penguin Classics Re-Covered ridiculously cheap. Read the rest of this entry »

Valerie Roybal

3 12 2009

Valerie Roybal creates interesting collages made of vintage and other collected materials. I like her Well Being Series: the one above called Well Being 2 is my favourite piece of all her works.

It’s interesting to wonder where each piece of her collage puzzles has come from. They’re bright and full of life.

Roybal studied printmaking and book arts at the University of New Mexico.

Artist Statement:

“I enjoy the process of finding materials and the possibility of re-purposing them: reinventing use, intention, or aesthetic, and the transformation into something dissimilar or unexpected. Read the rest of this entry »
