Listen to….Civil Civic

9 02 2010

Listen to bits of the whole album. It’s so awesome I don’t know what to do with myself.

Here are some of the reviews they’ve been given (I poached them from the website – I had to, they’re quite comical):

…If you, somehow, don’t find yourself moving to the wonderfully distorted bass guitar, catchy guitar plucks, and heavy bass hits of Less Unless, then go sit in the corner and think about what you did wrong in life…
- Fresh Press Vinyl

…This is a fucking great song. Anyone who tells you otherwise either doesn’t know their music or lives under ten million rocks…
- The Photon God

Check them out on myspace or on their blog.

Anyone else less ready than usual for Monday morning? Let’s hope that after an extra large coffee and some Miike Snow…I will be more useful.

Maura Cluthe

6 02 2010

As Maura Cluthe states on her website, she doesn’t just “like” drawing, she loves it.

She also loves robots! She has a collection of watercolour robots which are great.

She makes quite a few collages as well mixing her drawings with text and photos. Personally, I’m not really into collages but I do like the one I have featured above with the robots! Read the rest of this entry »

Design Love: At Home Library

5 02 2010

If this was my library, I would spend 24/7 of my upcoming two week Olympic holiday on that chair reading. I would also take daily naps and drink tea all day. Yes, perhaps that makes me a little unsociable but seriously, getting around Vancouver is going to be utter mayhem so why not hide from the chaos?

This cosy and quaint library belongs to graphic designer Nicole Balch. Lucky girl.

Listen to…The Black Keys

5 02 2010

Music is a major part of my day. It gets me through the day, whether a busy or slow one. “Strange Times” by The Black Keys is what got me going this fine Thursday morning.

Stephen Dinsmore

4 02 2010

In my art search one day, I landed upon Blue Gallery. At Blue, I found Stephen Dinsmore

Dinsmore paints primarily medium sized, oil on canvas works of landscapes or other still-life objects of nature. He has a few paintings which I wish were small; I can envision them in a small, relatively ornate frame (clashes the abstract, modern style, I know – that’s the point) placed grandiosely on a small wall saying, all walls need love…eat your heart out. AVATAR: Neytiri

3 02 2010

Watched AVATAR again last night. Decided to post a photo of Neytiri because not only do I love the movie, I love her character. Such a peaceful, loving soul.

Imagine what the world would be like if humans had Navi-like deep respect for the Earth we live on. Read the rest of this entry »

Book Review: The Fire

2 02 2010

A few years ago I read Katherine Neville’s novel, The Eight. A friend had recommended it years before but it wasn’t one day until I stumbled upon it at a bookstore that I went out of my way to buy it. The Eight, published in 1988, is one of the best page turners I’ve ever read. It tells the story of the famous Montalgne chess service that various people have died protecting. Each chapter switches back and forth from the 18th century and the French Revolution to the 1970’s. There are a lot of historical references which are sometimes hard to keep track of. It helps if you know a bit about history or are willing to make frequent Wikipedia trips.

It’s modern counterpart of the 21st century would be Dan Brown’s  Da Vinci Code: it’s the same mystery/thrill genre.

In 2008, Neville published The Fire, the sequel to The Eight.  I had no idea there was even a sequel in the works until I misplaced my copy of The Eight and went out to buy a new one. There beside the book I was looking for, was it’s sequel! Yes! In between the prequel and sequel, Neville published another two books, A Calculated Risk  and The Magic Circle. After reading The Eight,  I went on to read The Magic Circle, which I wasn’t very fond of. It was confusing. And unfortunately, the reviews for A Calculated Risk weren’t very good at all. This left me surprised for one because I thought her first work was great, and dissapointed because it didn’t give me much hope for her future books. Read the rest of this entry »
